Should I still see my dentist while my braces are on?

It is very important that you continue to see your family dentist while wearing braces.  It is often more difficult to brush and clean around the braces, and your dentist will want to continue with regular cleaning and examination visits.

How long will I have to wear braces?

Depending on your individual orthodontic condition, the length of treatment will vary.  At your initial consultation appointment, the doctors will discuss your particular needs and estimated treatment time.

What do braces feel like?
When braces are first placed or adjusted, most patients experience some discomfort as the teeth may become sore and tender to biting pressures.  This usually lasts for several days and can often be managed well with whatever pain medication you commonly take for headaches.  Some areas of the mouth may also become irritated as they initially become accustomed to the braces.  Overall, discomfort from braces is typically short in duration and easily managed.

What can’t I eat with braces?

During orthodontics, you want to avoid any hard foods that might break the braces, such as hard candies, nuts, popcorn kernels, beef jerky, ice, etc.  You should also avoid any sticky and sugary foods that may hide under the braces and cause cavities.  Examples of such foods are caramels, taffy, and licorice.

What happens if something breaks on my braces?

If a portion of your appliance breaks, let your orthodontist know so that arrangements can be made for repairs. For more information, please see our additional emergency information.

How frequently should I wear my elastics or rubber bands?

Every patient is unique, and the doctors will make specific recommendations if elastics are necessary.  In general, the doctors recommend wearing your elastics all of the time, except while eating or brushing.   Excellent cooperation with the doctors’ recommendations may help speed up your treatment.

Will I get a retainer after I get my braces off? Why are they important?

Yes, you will have retainers placed the same day your braces are removed. Because newly straightened teeth tend to move back to their original position, retainers are necessary to maintain your new smile.  In other words, your retainers are like an insurance policy to make sure your teeth stay straight.  The doctors will instruct you on how often you need to wear your retainers.
